When I first received (beautiful blade) taking if out of the leather sheath there were two large oxidized spots on the blade. I washed it off but the two spots left a clear discolorations (more of a clear shine than the rest of the blade). I put in for a return and received a replacement. The day I received the replacement, once opened, taking it out of the sheath, again there were now three oxidized spots but much smaller. Once I washed them off and used the polishing cloth (like I did with the first one) since the spots were much smaller they were not has noticeable as the last so I decided to keep it. I now believe the oxidation must be caused by the sheath. On to why I fear this blade.. The same day I decided to keep the blade I put it to the test, first with skinning potatoes.. It made quick work of skinning potatoes, the blade is very sharp (Note: For me the curve blade takes a bit of getting use to. I personally am more accustomed to a straight blades). After the potatoes I moved on to coring apples to make baked apples. Not sure how it happened but I slipped and landed the tip of the blade deep into the area of my hand between my index and thumb, up past the webbing into the muscle.. At first with any sharp blade, as some will know, it's a very quick pain, so quick, you might not even notice since it will not bleed right away. But from my experience, once I felt that quick jab I stopped what I was doing to look down at my hand and said "Oh, crap"... I comely walked (no need to panic since it still was not bleeding) to the medicine cabinet to retrieve bandages. By this time I drew attention from my family members who were watching television. They walked over to see what I had done and it was at this point I admit, I had a little fun grossing them out. Since the wound was still not bleeding, the 1/2" wide, 1/2" deep cut made a great talking mouth when I flexed my thumb and index finger apart. So if you are one, who is not afraid or rather skilled with very sharp, curved blade this is the one for you.I personally, haven't used it since....
